A 93-year-old living in a senior living facility was forced out of the premises by cops for not paying her rent. Juanita Fitgerald was left shaken after being physically dragged out of the property. According to WKMG Click Orlando, she did not pay rent for three months. Fitzgerald was reportedly told that she will be evicted several times but refused to get her belongings and leave when the day finally arrived. She said, “Unless you carry me out of here, I’m not going anywhere,” according to an affidavit. Police bodycam footage showed the woman screaming while being taken out of the property. Officials claim that she intentionally slid out of her chair and onto the floor and resisted when officers tried to pick her up, the report said. She was arrested on charges of trespassing.
News 6 investigator Adrianna Iwasinski spoke to the elderly woman after her arrest. The nonagenarian was wearing an orange jumpsuit and in handcuffs around her wrists and arms. There were also bruises on her arms. Fitzgerald denied the allegations that she didn't pay rent because she thought she was going to die soon. She said she tried to pay rent in October but was refused. The elderly woman stated that the assisted living home offered her assistance and tried to find her another home, but she refused. "I don't have anybody. My family is in Tennessee and I told them not to tell my son anything that's going on," she said. "I don't want them to help me. I don't need no help. I've got all the help I need," Fitzgerald said pointing to the sky.
According to Inside Edition, a Lake County Sheriff's Office spokesman confirmed that Fitzgerald was released on her own recognizance just before her birthday. She spent her birthday in a motel room thanks to Nicole Lett, who's worked with some of Fitzgerald's neighbors in the past. "I just couldn't let her stay in jail any longer," Lett said. "She's 94 and she's still feisty as ever... She doesn't want peoples' help she wants to be on her own. But unfortunately, she needs the help right now because she doesn't have anything anymore."
People online have been shocked and outraged by the way the elderly woman was treated during the entire ordeal. In the comments, one person wrote: I can’t believe that the building she lived in refuse to take her money! The woman was 3 months late and nobody stopped to think that maybe a 96 year old woman may have forgotten! Another added: She’s literally in a wheelchair, what kind of damage does she hold against an armed cop? She’s 94, don’t touch or treat the elderly that way. A third noted:Man, they shouldn't have arrested her. She doesn't have much life left and she needs to live her life being free. Another outraged netizen said: someone touches my grandma like that, oh trust me, i would be on death penalty.
